Microsoft's decision to pull out Windows XP from the shelves triggered an outpouring of support for the company's most popular operating system (OS). The withdrawal of XP caused huge concerns and evoked pleas from the enterprise and retail users alike.

In early 2007, Microsoft announced that Windows XP would be going off the market from January 2008. XP was later given an extension to June 30. However, the fans of six-year-old operating system seem dead against its retirement.

In fact, a group was formed to save Windows XP. The petitioners wanted Microsoft to keep selling Windows XP indefinitely. XP fans papered the Internet with blog posts and cartoons in support of their Save Vista campaign.

XP patrons trumpeted XP's superiority to Windows Vista, Microsoft's latest PC operating system, whose consumer launch inJanuary 2007 was greeted with lukewarm reviews.

They complained about Vista's hefty hardware requirements, its less-than-peppy performance, occasional incompatibility with other programmes and devices and frequent, irritating security pop-up windows.

Even the big PC makers seem to be receptive to the consumers outcry on XP. Three of the world's largest PC manufacturers -- Dell, Lenovo and HP -- `exploited' loopholes in Microsoft licensing terms as a means to supply Windows XP beyond its official end date.
